In Great Britain (England, Scotland and Wales) Biocidal Products (BP) are controlled under the GB Biocidal Products Regulation (GB BPR) by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), while in Northern Ireland the BP fall under the EU Biocidal Products Regulation (BPR)
Ozone generators are regulated under the GB BPR because ozone (‘Ozone generated from oxygen’; CAS number: 10028-15-6) is an in-situ generated biocide.
The two steps to get a biocidal product authorised by the HSE are first, the active substance approval (step 1), followed by the biocidal product authorization (step 2). In step one, the active substance ozone is evaluated and approved at the GB level for four specific product-types, including: PT 2 Disinfectants and algaecides not intended for direct application to humans or animals, PT 4 Food and feed area, PT 5 Drinking Water, and PT 11 Preservatives for liquid- cooling and processing systems.
In step two, the biocidal product containing the approved active substance is authorized for its intended uses, user category, etc.
Since 2025, the active substance Ozone generated from oxygen is actually jointly supported under GB BPR by the members of EurO3zon UK Ltd and of the European Ozone Trade Association Ltd who joined forces for approval of the active substance ozone on the GB market post-Brexit.
In due time, after obtaining approval for the active substance ozone, the ozone biocidal product dossiers will be supported by EurO3zon UK Ltd too.
